One Chinese businessman who has travelled to Hamheung said women sold sex in beauty parlours.
While a trader said the price for sex began at 20,000 won – or £14.
He added: “A Chinese-style massage is 10,000 won (£7) per 60 minutes and there is instantaneous prostitution with female masseuse.”
STARVING: The hookers are in hot demand with Chinese tourists.
He said brothel owners used phrases like “selling flowers” as terms for sex.
State-run prostitution is a feature of Kim’s regime.

Prostitution in South Korea.
Among the notorious red light districts and prostitution hotspots, South Korea is one which the average person is generally unaware of. Nevertheless, the 13 billion-dollars- a-year sex trade thrives in the outwardly conservative country like a hidden family secret, and is as much alive as the ones of Holland and Germany.
Traditionally prostitution was not a feature of South Korean society, only being introduced into the country in 1876 when it first opened its ports through a diplomatic pact, causing ethnic quarters for Japanese migrants to sprout up in Busan, Wonsan and Incheon.
The trade really got off the ground in the 1960s, with prostitution being a way of satisfying US military servicemen in the country so that American men would continue to stay and protect South Korea from the attacks of the North. This was ground, through a sense, in law; for negotiation between the Korean government and the US military ensured prostitution for the US soldiers in camp towns surrounding the military service. Though today, US officials publicly condemn prostitution they take little action to prevent it, and as such, US camp town prostitution happens even now, albeit outside military bases.
Such action has unfortunately formed the basis of widely held misconceptions about foreign men in Korea coming to corrupt Korean women and ultimately being the source of the whole grand problem.
“Window shops” a whole string of which lineВ Cheongnyangni 588.
But an issue more ignored by Korean society, perhaps to alleviate themselves of blame, is the inextricable involvement of Korean men themselves in sustaining and funding the business of prostitution. One example is that of Korean men using prostitution commonly as a means of entertainment when doing business together, one sex industry consultant is quoted as stating bluntly “that’s the business model we depend on, when the Korean men are doing business together, they hang out at these places”.
Across all sectors of society men engage in the services available; these range from aspiring celebrities seeking a wealthy patron, to cheap sex at dirty, and more often than not, critically dangerous places. With paid sex being available everywhere, it is little surprise that 20% of men in their 20s pay for sex at least four times a month, and some 514,000 to 1.2 million Korean women participate in the prostitution industry. To give a little more understanding of how big the industry is, it’s important to emphasize just how much is actually available. South Korea prior to the Special Law (more to come) had 4 red light districts; Cheongnyangni 588, Yongsan Station, Mia-ri and Jagalmadang, comparable to Amsterdam’s  De Wallen, Singelgebied and Ruysdaelkade. The services can range from kiss- in bars at the more moderate end; where men pay to kiss and fondle women, to massage parlours and the like at the more extreme end, where men will pay for a massage and sex. Others include whiskey bars, barbershops, DaeDdal Rooms, and salons, of which there is a variety, with TenPro (10%) salons aiming to draw customers by claiming to have the most beautiful 10 % of women in the industry.
With all this and with prostitution being illegal in Korea a natural question would be to ask just what exactly the Korean government are doing about the problem.В It is true that measures are gradually being taken, with the 2004 Special Law on Sex Trade prohibiting the buying and selling of sex and shutting down brothels. In 2007 the government announced that sex tourism by Koreans would be made illegal, as well as Korean going abroad to sell sex (another issue not touched upon). Still even with all this enforcement is weak and corruption problematic, there is little evidence that the new legislation has made much difference, with the trade simply finding other ways to carry on its business. The crackdown on red light districts has also done little to deal with the issue, producing insteadВ the adverse result of prostitution becomingВ more underground and also turning intoВ an even more competitive business with lower prices and more services.
To summarize, this is a short article, in which I have merely given a basic overview of aВ South Korea littleВ known. There are many other factors pertaining to this issue such asВ the rise of teenage prostitution and even the prominence of prostitution among the older generation. The key message I am trying to convey is that theВ problemВ at hand is one that is rapidly spiraling out of control and so demands to be heard, not just by the South Koreans willing to turn a blind eye, but by the whole international community in order to bring a change and altogether stop the exploitation of Korean women across all sectors of society.
